How to Tell If Someone Is Cheating at Crossplay
Crossplay rewards players who can read a tight board and squeeze value out of limited space. That also makes it hard to judge, from the outside, whether an opponent is simply good or is getting outside help. This guide explains what solver-assisted play tends to look like, why an individual brilliant move usually means nothing, and how to think about a run of suspiciously optimal turns.
What solver-assisted play looks like
A solver evaluates every legal placement and returns the highest-value option, often ignoring the shortcuts humans rely on. When someone leans on one, a few patterns tend to emerge over time:
- Consistently maximal placements. Not just good moves, but repeatedly the single best-scoring option available, including ones that are easy to miss.
- Obscure but valid words. Unusual short words or hooks that unlock premium squares, appearing more often than a typical player would produce them.
- Flat, machine-like timing. Difficult positions solved about as quickly as easy ones, without the pauses a hard board usually causes.
Why one strong move proves nothing
Every regular player occasionally finds a move that looks superhuman. A lucky rack, a familiar pattern, or plain skill can all produce a single near-perfect turn. Treating one great move as proof of cheating is a mistake — it is exactly the kind of thing that happens by chance across thousands of games. Judge behavior over many moves, not one screenshot.
Why repeated optimal play is different
The math changes when strong, unusual moves repeat. Finding the solver's top choice once is ordinary; finding it turn after turn — especially the non-obvious ones most people overlook — becomes statistically hard to explain without help. A pattern carries far more weight than any single move, which is why analyzing several of an opponent's turns is more informative than fixating on one.
How to check without accusing anyone
Stay analytical rather than accusatory. Collect a handful of your opponent's most striking moves and analyze each one to see how solver-like it was. Look for a trend across those results instead of reacting to a single number. A high Suspicious Move Score is a reason to pay attention, not a conclusion about a person.
Common questions
Is playing very well against the rules? No. Skill is not cheating, and strong players naturally produce solver-like moves more often. The question is whether the pattern is beyond what skill and luck reasonably explain.
Can I be certain? Not from move analysis alone. It measures how unusual play is; it cannot see a second device or read intent. Use it as one input, not a verdict.
